About Us

The Savannahlander has been operated by Cairns Kuranda Steam since the beginning of 2004. The service is one of the long distance passenger transport service contracts funded by the Queensland Government.

Cairns Kuranda Steam was formed to operate a steam hauled passenger rail service from Cairns, up the Kuranda Range, to Kuranda. Unfortunately, this service was not able to “pay its way” and it was withdrawn in October 2004. In addition to operating the Savannahlander, the company provides a range of rail services including consulting, diesel loco hire, rollingstock maintenance, crew hire and terminal services.

Our administration office and depot are located just north of the Cairns CBD.
